It's possible to learn a culture by reading about it or observing it for a certain period of time, but there always comes a point when it's easier to just live it. It helps someone to learn faster, more intimately, and to remember for longer. He's not just trying to learn the customs, he's trying to understand what it feels like. That's something that can't come from a book. Even if he hates it and is uncomfortable the whole time, at least he'll know. Do you know what I mean?
